On this day in 1862, Julia Ward Howe's poem "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was first published in the Atlantic Monthly. Julia was born in New York City in 1819. In 1870, Julia was the first to proclaim Mother's Day in 1870. Julia also wrote updated words to "John Brown's Body". Julia was active in the causes of pacifism and women's suffrage. One of the many of Julia's honors is that she was on the 15 cent Great Americans series postage stamp in 1987.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic is set to the music of a tune written in 1856 by William Steffe, and know as "Caanan's Happy Shore" and Brother, Will You Meet Me?".
