Michigama

Michigama, an American Indian word meaning great or large lake, became Michigan and the 26th state on this day in 1837. The first white explorer to visit Michigan was Frenchman Etienne Brule in 1620. The French built several trading post, forts and villages, the most important one being Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit. Bearwiskers says ... there are lots of teddy bear lovers in the Great State of Michigan.

Nellie Bly

On this day Nellie Bly circled the globe in 72 days, beating the record of Phileas Fogg of around the world in 80 days. Born May 5, 1864 and named Elizabeth Jane Corhran, her nickname was Pink. Pink was hired at the age of 18, at the Pittsburgh Dispatch and needed a pen name. Pink came up with Nellie Bly, a character in the song Nelly Bly, written 35 years earlier. Nellie wrote on women's rights issues, investigative reports, and a World War I reporter.

Boss Radio

On this day in 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa, WFI-AM radio merges with WDAR to form WLIT and later to form WFIL radio (now WEAZ). WFI was owned by Strawbridge and Clothier and WDAR was owned by Lit Brothers. Later the new station was moved to 46 th and Market St. next to the Arena, which was the first broadcasting facility in the nation specifically for TV broadcasting. This is where Bandstand started with Bob Horn and later Dick Clark as host. In 1964 WFIL moved to City Line and Monument Ave. Many name change and owners later, WFIL is owned by Salem's WNTP which was WIBG, WFIL's main rock n roll rival. Bearwiskers says...Cool!

The Original Amateur Hour

Today in 1948, Ted Mack came to TV as the Original Amateur Hour, and had a 22 year run. The original Original Amateur Hour on radio was hosted by Major Bowes. Edward Bowes or Major as he insisted everyone call him, started a show on the radio that was called the Major Bowes and his Capitol Family, and was a great hit. Ted Mack was was the Majors talent coordinator, and took over the hosting duties after the Major died.

Today in 1943 (Yep 1943), See See Rider hits #1 on the billboard charts - Harlem's Hit Parade. Wes Bea Booze is the jazz singer that made it #1 and is considered the song's best version. Seen See See Rider or C C Rider or Easy Rider was first recorded by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey in 1924! Chuck Willis version gave birth to the dance craze "The Stroll". Bearwiskers says... the best version for me is the Animals version!

Andy Jackson

On this day in 1853, a bronze statue of Andrew Jackson was unveiled in Lafayette Park, Washington, D.C. This is the statue that is across from the White House. Jackson was the 7 th President of the United States, and Old Hickory was a country lawyer in Jonesborough, TN. Jackson was the last President to be a veteran of the American Revolution.

Wild Kingdom

On this day in 1964, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins begins on NBC. Perkins started out as a laborer at the Saint Louis Zoo and rose through the ranks and became the Zoo director in 1938. Marlin Perkins was born March 28, 1905 in Carthage, Missouri and there is a statue of him in Central Park. Wild Kingdom was on for 27 years!

The polar bear's fur is not white, it's clear and hollow and looks white because it reflect light. Their fur is oily and water repellent. Polar bears have been known to swim 100 miles at a time.
