Started by Al Capp on November 15, 1937, in his comic strip, Sadie Hawkins was the homeliest gal in in the hills. Her father worried that Sadie would never find a husband, so he started a race where the unmarried women chased bachelors.If a women caught one of the slowpoke men, he would have to marry the lucky dame.
