The Holland Tunnel opened on November 13, 1883. It was the first fixed vehicular crossing between New York and New Jersey. The first non official through the Holland Tunnel was a truck making a delivery to Bloomingdale's. The toll was $.50 and the tunnel cost 48 million to build. As of 2003 the tunnel has made 378,057,000 million. The tunnel was named after Clifford Milburn Holland, the designer of the tunnel.
