On this day in 1890, The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in Washington, DC. The DAR is dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. The DAR is a lineage based membership organization for women. There are over 3,000 chapters of the DAR in the United States and 26 chapters in 12 foreign countries! Were the Vikings the first europeans in the new world? Rasmus Anderson published a book in 1874 that says so. The date was chosen because the ship Restauration coming from Stavanger, Norway, arriving in New York on October 9, 1825. Leif is said to have discovered the new world in about 1001.
