Michigama

Michigama, an American Indian word meaning great or large lake, became Michigan and the 26th state on this day in 1837. The first white explorer to visit Michigan was Frenchman Etienne Brule in 1620. The French built several trading post, forts and villages, the most important one being Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit. Bearwiskers says ... there are lots of teddy bear lovers in the Great State of Michigan.
